Community Development Plan

Four times a semester, each RD and their RAs will complete a full Community Development Plan (CDP) for their building/area. This plan will focus on a specific pillar and LLC/Themes, as applicable, and will include intentionally planning for aspects of community development, including:
-
Weekly Walkthroughs/Health and Safety Inspections
-
Monthly Bulletin Boards
-
Door Tags twice a semester
-
Desk/Duty Rounds nightly
-
Floor Meetings monthly
-
In-Services each semester
-
Social and Passive interactions with residents
-
Upholding Community Standards
-
Programming (Pillar and Social)
Pillar Programming in each of these four parts of the semester will focus on all the pillars and particular, selected focus areas identified in those pillars, as outlined at the bottom of this page.
If an area includes an LLC/Theme, programming should include a connection to it wherever possible and appropriate.
Each CDP must include an outline of what pillar programs will occur in that building/area and which RA(s) will complete these programs. This plan should be created as a complete set of offerings and as a whole, not at the individual RA level. Once topic areas/objectives are identified for each program, the RAs responsible for that program will further develop the plan to facilitate it. Each RA must participate in the facilitation of programs in ALL pillars.
The number of program ideas in a CDP should match the number of RAs currently working in that area. A minimum of half of those ideas should be assigned for facilitation by individual RAs. The other ideas may be assigned to individual RAs, or RA partners may select which they will facilitate. (Yes, there may be ideas each CDP period that are not actually facilitated.) The programs chosen to be facilitated must include at least one faculty and one staff program (A faculty member is someone who teaches at the university. E.g. Dr. Burke Professor of economics. A staff member is someone who works at the university but does not teach. (E.g. Chris Laib Director of SAIL.). This plan should also include budget information so each program is allotted an appropriate amount of funds for its facilitation. All pillar programs should have an educational component.
Throughout the course of each semester, each RA must complete a minimum of two (2) pillar programs independently and not partnered with another RA. This is to encourage each staff member’s development and experience in facilitating programs from start to finish.
In addition to pillar programs, each RA is responsible for facilitating minimally one social event/program with their residents per CDP period. This could be watching a movie together, taking a group to dinner, even playing a game outside the building. The goal of these activities should be to get to know all residents on an RA’s floor/section, and not simply be with the same recurring small group of people. These activities do NOT need a proposal or prior planning/approval, but do require RAs to complete the evaluation form to accurately report the events and number of people present.
Each year, each building has an allotted amount of money for programming efforts. Please remember that, if the budget is available, those dollars can also be used for social events! Each RA should talk to their RD if they have an idea for a social event that would cost money. That budget is at the discretion for the RD to allocate and spend.
No more than two (2) RAs may work together on any one pillar program (with the exception of the all-hall). Each RA will independently discuss the number of residents they have made their goal to attend each program and how they intend to meet this number. Should this number of students attending a program NOT meet the projected goal, the RA(s) responsible for the program will need to review it with their RD. Specifics about program advertisement, content, and overall attendee experience may be discussed, in order to determine if the program appropriately met expectations or if another program needs to be completed to meet the requirement. It is at the discretion of the RD to determine if the program was completed in a satisfactory way to count for the requirement.
Please keep in mind that these numbers are the minimums for programming. Each RA should feel free to go above and beyond this number to further enhance their community and connection with their residents.
In order to receive credit, the program must be complete with evaluation (i.e. not it’s scheduled for another date… it’s actually done) by the due date established in the pillar focus chart above.
